Personal Development

Our vision for Personal Development

At Bourne Grammar School we celebrate and place a high value on the individuality of our students, and on the traits and experiences that make them unique. In order to flourish and to achieve their individual potential, we believe that students need to engage with as many Personal Development opportunities as possible in a combination that is unique to them. Our vision for Personal Development, is that by the time they leave, all students are prepared to be responsible, respectful, engaged and influential citizens, willing to act with both kindness and courage in order to make a positive difference to their own lives and those of others.  Mutual respect pervades the life of our School, and we aim to help students develop a strength of character that supports them to overcome any challenges they may encounter in the future whilst equipping them with the necessary skills and qualities to build healthy relationships and make positive and healthy choices.

Personal development is fundamental for our students to make the most out of their time at Bourne Grammar School and it’s essential for them to fully flourish academically too. This is why our mission statement and ethos states that by the time our students leave us they will be well qualified, well rounded and well prepared. To meet their academic potential, our students need to also benefit from outstanding Personal Development provision and take advantage of the wealth of experiences that Personal Development promotes. Our Personal Development programme therefore works together with our Academic Curriculum and prepares students for the complexities of the modern world, equipping them with the tools they need to thrive academically, emotionally and socially and allows them to be ready to face the challenges and make the most of the opportunities that life has to offer.

Where does Personal Development take place
Personal Development takes place both within and beyond the subjects students study in the classroom. There are a core set of Personal Development activities that all students will access through our Personal Development curriculum which takes place in tutor time, assemblies, Personal Development lessons in the curriculum and drop-down PSHE days. There is also a rich set of additional opportunities that students can access both in and outside of School and all students are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of the School and the wider community. This may be through our House system, student leadership programmes, charity work, extra-curricular societies and clubs, the Duke of Edinburgh scheme and other trips and visits. Finally, our Careers programme is woven into all aspects of School life, from subject lessons to Personal Development sessions, assemblies, post-16 and post-18 preparation days, personal guidance and a lecture programme.
