Regional Final of the ESU Schools’ Mace Debating Competition

On Monday, the Year 12 Debating Team attended the Regional Final of the ESU Schools’ Mace Debating Competition hosted by King’s School, Grantham.  Content by Connie Bayliss

The event consisted of three debates featuring six schools from across the region with a range of topics, including the use of influencers in advertising, animal testing for scientific purposes and fines for sports clubs if their fans commit violence. Our team was arguing against fines for sports clubs, and we were up against Stamford School in an engaging debate that was thoroughly entertaining for both the participants and the audience.

Our speakers did fantastically well, and, although they did not quite manage to be the one team selected to go through to the National Final, they received some highly positive feedback from the judges.  We were extremely impressed with the effort and time they have devoted to the competition. This is only the second year that we have been a part of the ESU competition and to have made it this far is a testament to the dedication and skill of our team.  Their Year 13 coaches, as well as the debating society co-ordinator, Mr Mitchell (Physics), are so proud of them and have enjoyed watching their skills improve over the last few months.

Monday evening was an incredible event and has provided our debaters with further debating experience and we even got the chance to see Isaac Newton’s own signature that he had carved into the school’s windowsill when he was a student there! If you would like to get involved with debating at school, please come along to the Debating Society on Thursday lunchtimes in Lab 3 for engaging conversations, thrilling debates and fun games to develop your skills.
