BGS Tennis News of the Week

The rain may pour but, like Wimbledon, it doesn’t dampen our spirits here at Bourne Grammar’s junior section.
Ten girls turned up to fight it out to be crowned the new Year7/8 Tennis Queen. The group split into two groups of five and all played 3 games against each other, with all games being important as the more games you won the greater your chance of winning the league or coming second and making the semi-finals. After an hour of great play with the girls showing much improvement from last year, and even last term, the final league placements were sorted.
Playing in the semi-finals: Maddie Keith vs best friend and chief giggle queen, Jemima Garland and Lilian Osoba vs Ananya Sahoo.
The games were very close with the finalists squeaking through by winning 2-1 in each semi-final, and in Lilian’s case on a deuce point. The honour game then occurred for third and fourth, with Jemima winning the important third place title and Ananya coming fourth. The main final was another great game, but Maddie Keith’s long and deep shots were a little too much for Lilian to keep returning in the end.
All girls played extremely well and should be very proud of themselves.
The boys U15 Doubles tournament was also held this week, and competition within this age group to both play in school matches and to hold this title, along with that of Singles champion, is very fierce.
Due to some illness the numbers were slightly reduced, but the level of play was still very high, causing Mrs McAuley a real headache for selection for school matches in the upcoming weeks.
However, the tournament favourites stormed through to win the title of best Doubles pair within their age range: Ted Mylchreest and Rohan Lesiw. This pairing has been outstanding for the last two years, being almost unbeatable in the local area.
