Bourne Grammar School

Personal Development - Intent

1. Bourne Grammar School focuses on providing the Best Atmosphere and Best Support to nurture students who are well rounded and well prepared for their future.

2. The School wishes its students to become well-informed, active and responsible citizens who are confident, courteous and able to make positive and healthy choices.

3. The School values integrity and equips students with the necessary skills and qualities to build healthy relationships, resilience and strategies to maintain good mental health.

4. Mutual respect pervades the life of the School and our aim is to develop a strength of character that helps students overcome the challenges they are likely to encounter.

5. Students learn to take steps to safeguard themselves and others by recognising online and offline risks to their wellbeing as well as knowing where to go for additional support.

6. All students are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of the School and the wider community.

7. In doing so, students learn to recognise their own worth, develop a sense of their own identity and the ability to take their place in the community, as well as respecting and working effectively with others.

8. Students are encouraged to reflect on their experiences and to recognise how they are developing personally and socially, addressing the spiritual, social, moral and cultural issues that form an intrinsic part of life.

Personal Development – Implementation

1. The School advances opportunities for students to make tangible contributions to the life of the School and wider community through the House system, student leadership teams, charity work, and programmes such as peer mentoring.

2. There is a plethora of extra-curricular activities on offer - sports clubs, music ensembles, whole-school productions and societies - for a breakdown of the extra-curricular activities available click here.

3. The weekly School Bulletin on our homepage includes regular reports on our substantial trips and visits programme where a typical year sees approximately 40 day trips, 8 residential trips in the UK and 11 residential trips overseas; in addition, over a hundred of our students attain awards each year through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.

4. A comprehensive pastoral support network is strengthened further by our Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education curriculum, details of which can be found here.

5. Relationships and Sex Education plays an important part of a student’s education at Bourne Grammar School, as does our weekly assembly programme, safeguarding curriculum, and the careers advice on offer.

6. All students follow a planned tutorial programme and meet regularly with their Form Tutor on a one-to-one basis during Student Progress Review Meetings.

7. Progress, effort and self-improvement are all recognised in line with academic attainment, helping to foster a growth mindset.

8. The Head Student and Senior Prefect team lead on events such as the whole-school mock election, Amnesty International and the School Council, and hundreds of students willingly volunteer to support our open evenings.

9. The School is proud of its students and believes the atmosphere and support provided allows them to flourish.
